connecticut, this is not about me. this is mott about politics. this is about doing the right thing for all the families who are here that have been torn apart by gun violence. it's about them and all the families going forward so we can prevent this from happening again. that's what it's about. the law enforcement officials putting their lives at risk, that's what it's about. it's not about politics. >> president obama making his second trip to connecticut since the newtown school shootings, he did that earlier this week, making the last ditch attempt to the faltering efforts to pass stricter gun legislation. then on thursday, the senate ending a filibuster attempt for a bill which clears the path for a floor fight next week and it could bring about the biggest changes in gun laws in about 20 years.

we'll talk to the panel about this and jim, we saw the president's enthusiasm as passion for this issue when a lot of people sort of noticed the same kind of enthusiasm in favor of gun control legislation on the part of the media. >> we saw the bully pulpit and by that, i don't mean the president and trappings making speeches world wide. the real bully pulpit and he when you get to senator biden-- pardon me vice-president biden getting the case and senator man chin thanked them. >> we saw a lot in the media using the language that the president used in the state of the union address and one of the anchors can't believe that the g.o.p. planned a filibuster against some gun control measures and cbs says

that the republicans owe the families of newtown at least an up or down vote. is it appropriate for the media to really adapt and adopt the same kind of language that the president is using. >> i think that the penaople, the anchors that were using that language, some, not all, said as the president said. but i do think that it is natural to use the same thing when roughly 80 to 90% of the country pretty much feels the same way about this issue. look, i think that john gandleman said they've won, what are we debating, universal background checks, not banning assault weapons, we're not banning a limit on magazine clips, not debating anything that the president said in his initial suggestions what we needed to do to fight this.

come on, declare victory, wayne lapierre saying we won and we're fighting about a small measure that would make a modest amount of-- >> and judy says, the problem is the the media are not echoing that, the media are saying that the republicans are terrible and we're forgetting that harry reid is in charge of the senate. if the president saying we have to have a vote. pick up a phone and call harry reid and they're both from the same party. what's wrong with that? why aren't we hearing that? why isn't there a front page piece saying where is harry reid. >> the national journal ran a piece and jumped the gun and said that the n.r.a. had already won so it and the all one way or the other. the national journal came out with this, you know, the n.r.a. wins this. that's just not true. >> i want to talk about the newtown families and our hearts go out to them and can't imagine what they're

going through. it's a week now and they've appeared on cnn and had a big photo spread in people magazine. >> and the president flew to connecticut and he we saw the speech and they lobbied lawmakers on capitol hill. what do you think about the way the newtown family has allowed itself to be put out there and sort of used for political purposes? >> it's the way things work now and it has been extremely effective. mike allen and jim vandheim in politico had a story, the moral authority and it's nice if the media had clearer, diane sawyer saying it's a david and goliath story. and david is the good guy and

goliath the bad guy and in this case whether abc would that way. >> aside from lapierre's media appearances panned by everybody on the left and even a couple on the right, are those people upset about more gun legislation and look at it as an infringement on those second amendments, are those people's voices being heard in the mainstream media, judy. >> i think they are in the print media more than they are on television, because the newtown families are visual compelling story that everyone wants to cover. but i do think that the fact that the newtown families exist as individuals and as a unit, makes them a new element in in story that deserves coverage along with mayor bloomberg's grass roots campaign and these are elements they have to pay attention to. >> fox has a newtown family

who has been on and totally disagrees with a majority of newtown families and given coverage here and elsewhere, but not a lot. >> let's say that the coverage is o i is one-dimensional, gun or no guns. where is the mental health. fox has done mental health angles. and a whole bunch of angles. >> there is a piece in the washington free beacon-- >> first, a reporter faces jail time for being a good journalist. >> a real test against the freedom of the press playing out in a colorado courtroom as a reporter faces jail time for refusing to identify her sources. where is the outrage? where is the coverage? that's next on news watch. plus a 50% annual bonus. and everyone but her...

>> the case of fox news reporter jana winter finally gaining attention by the mainstream media after widely being reported across this network last week. winter's exclusive july 25th story last year revealing the existence of a notebook that accused gunman james holmes sent to his psychiatrist days before the aurora movie theater shooting that left 12 dead and 58 injured and now arapahoe county d.a., threatening winter to divulge the names of confidential sources who gave here the information or spend time in jail refusing to do so. the judge delaying his decision on monday so we haven't gotten exactly what the judge is going to do, whether he's going to force jana to reveal that source or lock her up. judy, you almost singlehandedly, because of your own personal experiences in the story, similar one, got people focused on this. i didn't see anybody talking about it until i read your piece.

>> thank you very much, but i had a lot of help and initially, believe it or not, from social media because for some reason, the mainstream media didn't seem very interested. but i did want to salute hunter schwartz of the feed, one of the first people to write about the absence of mainstream media coverage and also jill scarboro who mentioned her case and this can happen when reporters aren't paying attention and i think that's the lesson we've seen and thank judge carlos moore, a new judge in this case for trying to begin to make this issue go away. >> and we should also thank the editors of the new york times who cover the b section because they put it on b-6 which i thought was very generous and very late with it, so, whoever does the-- >> as of monday, there was nothing. on tuesday, they ran an op-ed, but-- >> b-3. >> but it was not anywhere to

be seen when it first came out. >> let's go back to rick, as someone who has been a source for journalists, and former spokesperson and-- >> possibly with somebody at the table, perhaps. >> explain to folks, i don't know that everybody fully understands the relationship between sources and reporters and why that, that agreement between them when it requires anonymity, what happens when it's broken. >> it's certainly very important and sources are the ones, consistent sources, most people. we know who is pushing the limit and who says things in the media that weren't quite exactly what we said. so there is he' a huge industry of people who know the reporters and too much. it's important to be able to get the story out and not play gotc gotcha politics. and the problem, focusing on on one world and not the spirit of the conversation.

>> and someone said if jana worked for anybody other fox news the story would have gotten a lot more attention. >> it's true. and media, all of us here at fox news right, left, center, supported miss winter. and miss winter, yeah, miss winter, i got it right. and that we did that, yes, because people don't understand that we may have different viewpoints where we come from politically, but we all understand, i hope, good journalism. >> there's a-- i completely agree, this is the finest hour of the media, even the columbia journalist review came through with a story on this much to their chagrin, i'm sure helping fox. but franklin center for integrity, a conservative media watch dog group, and media outlet, did a seven part series on terry mccauliffe and green jobs, and solyndra, a 123, boone doggle in virginia

and mississippi. and mccall is suing. and the piece is not defamatory, it says they wanted-- >> it's journalism. >> last word on this for now, the fact that the judge has delayed his decision, do you think in the end he'll do the right thing? >> i'm certainly hoping so and the amount of media attention also has to affect that division. all i can say, i would have gone to jail to protect you anytime. >> thank you. look, this issue, what are we going to do about cuba, some people go brookings institute just led a high level delegation down there. we've got to get our policy straight on cuba and i think it may serve to highlight that.it's good. even though i wish that jay-z had done what bono did when he went down there, which is to talk about the people who are in jail and the dissidents. >> there are pictures of the couple smoking cigars and drinking martinis, not that i have anything against that, sounds like a blast. is that an educational mission, the spirit of what that program, the obama administration program is supposed to be about? >> judy did a great job of spinning the politics of cuba and how about the law, they broke the law, even though abc news reader josh elliott, good morning america, calm down, no rules were broken.

judge josh ruled. and i'm uncomfortable with abc saying this is a nonissue. and what's the connection there. >> there's never been a shortage, judy, of left wings groups going to russia in the 30's, and north vietnam, jane fonda talking how good-- and if you want to will being at the chronicle of political prison e, oddly jay-z and beyonce didn't meet them. but it would be fun if the mainstream media would say how did they get the approval from the obama administration. >> looking at a new ad, msnbc. and argue that children do not belong to their parents, instead calling for the larger community to take charge. watch. >> we have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we've

always had kind of a private notion of children. >> your kid is yours, and totally your responsibility. we haven't had a very collective notion of these are our children, part of it is we have to break through the private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities. once it's everybody's responsibility and not just the household he's then we start making better investments. >> kind of when you watch her, there's like this pause before she launches into it where she thinks should i say this? and she goes and says this. >> my friend called it socialist fire. i sort of agree with her, however, anybody who is a left wing talk show host or right wing talk show host will tell you it's slanted. >> and espousing left wing views on public education, is this surprising? >> no, at eric womhim--

pell, was it-- maybe that was the idea she works on a tv network and they need viewers and maybe get people riled up is a way to get people tuning in. >> they've gotten them. it goes right to the base, and it was a core message that resonated clearly inside that side. isn't she in an unfortunate way saying what hillary clinton says, it takes a village. >> and it's private versus collective. we've heard from the administration, fair share of money and this is fair share of family. and they're going to take the idea it's no longer private family, but collective family. no one else is saying it, but where else do we see collective versus private. >> our friend rich lawrie had a piece that said this promo is proof that liberals are

anti-parents. >> well, i think that is-- that's overboard. as i actually thought her op-ed and defending her position was overboard, she said she thought it was uncontroversial and then she doubles down. give me a break. i might have that position, but i know it's controversial. >> rick, nobody is going to come and take your guns away and nobody is come to go take your children away. i think that everybody needs to calm down. it's tv. >> tell that to the home schoolers, harassment all the time the government is coming to take your children away. >> i'm telling you to stop one second because we're taking a break, and next the most powerful people in the media revealed.
